A seven day tour of one of Spain most well-known birdwatching regions, Extremadura and the Monfrague National Park, hope to the Spanish imperial eagle and Dońana National Park, stronghold of the Iberian lynx. Explore the Strait of Gibraltar and witness incredible bird of prey and stork migration, all with a fully licenced local guide. A trip to remember! TRANSFER TO EXTREMADURA BIRDING ARROCAMPO RESERVOIR
Upon arrival at Seville, we transfer to hotel in Trujillo. Birding en route with excellent chances for seeing Bonelli's Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Great Spotted Cuckoo and Great Bustard, both sandgrouse species, amongst others. We will visit the Arrocampo reservoir, in search for breeding Squacco Heron, Purple Herons and Little Bittern other waterbirds.
MONFRAGUE & TRUJILLO
Monfragüe is an impressive mountain region full of raptors & Black stork breeding. We will also have opportunities for watching Griffon, Black & Egyptian vultures, Spanish Imperial Eagles both Black and Red Kites, Short-toed and Booted Eagles. Blackcap, Dartford and Sardinian Warblers. On the cliffs possible species include Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting, Red-rumped Swallow, Crag Martin, Black Stork, Eurasian Eagle Owl. Overnight at Trujillo (Same as previous night)
After breakfast we will travel to the plains. An immens esteppe region with rocky hills Trujillo and Cáceres towns seperated with isolated woodland patches. A great opportunity to see some of the specialities of the steppe habitats such as Stone Curlew, Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Montagu's Harrier, Great and Little Bustards, Lesser Kestrel, Corn Buntings, Calandra Lark, Black-eared Wheatears. Eurasian Spoonbill, Cattle Egret, Spanish Sparrow, Crested Lark and Zitting Cisticola. Overnight at Caceres.
DOÑANA NATIONAL PARK, EL ROCIO
Breakfast at our hotel in El Rocio. Today we will go right into the heart of the National Park along a sandy road that leads to the visitor centre named in honour of the naturalist Jose Antonio Valverde. In the surrounding fields and wetlands, it is possible to watch species such as Purple Swamphen, Hen Harrier, Common Cranes, Glossy Ibis and perhaps the first Squacco and Purple Herons arriving from their winter headquarters. Open fields such as Lesser Short-toed Larks, Stone Curlew or Pin-tailed Sandgrouse. Overnight at El Rocio.
Saltpans and wetlands around Sanlúcar de Barrameda where we will look for White-headed Duck, Marbled Duck, Red-knobbed (Crested) Coot and Slender-billed Gulls amongst the main targets. In the evening transfer to La Linea de la Concepcion. Optional:- In the evening we will guide you around the town to explore the large array of tapas & wine eateries of the area.
STRAIT OF GIBRALTAR
Exploring the northern shore of the famous Strait of Gibraltar with magnicent views of two continents and the famous Rock of Gibraltar nearby. We will experience the amazing close views of bird of prey & stork migration, as well as visiting nearby Northern bald ibis breeding colonies and many other species. Overnight La Linea (same as previous night)
After breakfast, we birdwatch in some nearby woodlands for spring migrants, before later making our way to Gibraltar International airport for return flight.
